Foundation for Integrative Oncology
Logo

The Foundation for Integrative Oncology accompanies, guides, and supports people along their cancer journey by promoting awareness of and providing access to complementary therapies.

Description:
The Foundation’s goal is to provide a nurturing environment where cancer patients and their loved ones can experience and learn about integrative oncology services. These healing opportunities foster emotional, psychological and spiritual growth. The services support both the complementary therapeutic approaches and traditional medical treatment. Ultimately, these complementary therapies compassionately care for people with cancer, regardless of their ability to pay.

History:
The Foundation for Integrative Oncology began in 2000 as a physician and practitioner-based grassroots effort to broaden community awareness and patient access to integrative oncology. A Board of Directors consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, complementary therapy practitioners, and cancer survivors governs the Foundation. An advisory board consisting of leading scholars in the area of complementary medicine also helps guide the Foundation in its work. They are: Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., of the Institute for the Study of Health and Illness, Michael Lerner, Ph.D., of Commonweal, and Martin Rossman, M.D., from the Academy for Guided Imagery.

In 2001, the Foundation began issuing scholarships to people so they could access complementary therapies, regardless of their financial resources. Currently the Foundation awards approximately $50,000 per year to scholarship recipients.
