Agency Details:
International Bird Rescue Research Center
IBRRC is dedicated to mitigating human impact on aquatic birds and other wildlife, worldwide. This is achieved through emergency response, education, research, and planning.
Description:
IBRRC is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization established for the treatment of aquatic birds that are sick, injured, oiled, or orphaned. It is through this program that we are not only able to care for local injured, orphaned, and sick aquatic birds but can advance our skills and capabilities to apply to oil spills.
History:
In January 1971, two tankers collided beneath the Golden Gate Bridge spilling 900,000 gallons of crude oil into San Francisco Bay. Very little was known about oiled bird care at the time. Nonetheless, volunteers from all over the bay area showed up to help care for the 7,000 oiled birds collected and despite their well-intentioned attempts, only 300 birds survived. Within months, a small group of professionals formed the International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC). The primary goals were to develop oiled wildlife cleaning and rehabilitation techniques, promote ongoing research and provide oiled wildlife response management capabilities during oil spills.
