The HOPE Program and Senior Peer Counseling

The mission of Marin County Community Mental Health Services is to promote emotional well-being and recovery through the provision of mental health services, advocacy, and education. Services are provided in partnership with clients, families, and community based organizations and strive to be effective, culturally competent, and compassionate.

Description:
The HOPE Program and Senior Peer Counseling are departments within Community Mental Health Services of the County of Marin. Both programs are offered in English and Spanish and are offered where the senior resides.

The HOPE Program is a Mental Health Services Act funded program that provides intensive case management for people over the age of 60 and who are suffering from mental illness. The HOPE Program team uses a multi-disciplinary approach and is comprised of mental health practitioners, nurse practitioners, a public guardian and a psychiatrist.

Senior Peer Counseling is also for people over the age of 60 but the focus is on supporting those who would benefit from a little extra support in their life. Support is provided by trained volunteers who receive weekly supervision from a licensed Marriage Family Therapist(MFT) and/or Registered Nurse. Decreasing isolation, issues of aging, grief and depression are common issues addressed in Senior Peer Counseling.

For information about our September 2009 Training for Spanish/English speaking volunteers, please call Nan Heflin at 415-499-6802 or e-mail nheflin@co.marin.ca.us

History:
The Senior Peer Counseling Program was a part of Older Adult Services under Marin County Community Mental Health. In 2007 when the funding was increased under the Mental Health Services Act, the HOPE Program was created. The HOPE Program and Senior Peer Counseling currently provide mental health services to older adults in Marin County.
