History:
Muir Woods National Monument is located in Mill Valley, California, 12 miles north of San Francisco. Muir Woods was declared a National Monument in 1908 through the generous donation of William Kent. In 1972, Golden Gate National Recreation Area was established with Muir Woods included within its boundaries. The main feature of this National Monument is the last old growth redwood forest in the San Francisco Bay Area and its associated plants and animals. The park also commemorates the early history of conservation in the United States.
