Partnership For Sustainable Communities
The mission of the Partnership for Sustainable Communities is to help advance the long-term sustainability of American communities by defining and promoting the best practices in land use planning and real estate development that contribute to that goal.
Description:
Program Areas • Define what contributes to community sustainability in regard to land use and development practices and document best practices, case studies and policy models. • Document the social and environmental cost of land use policies and practices that encourage sprawl, large lots, large single-family homes, “big box” retail and continued reliance on private automobiles. • Educate the public, including elected officials and developers, about land use and community planning policies and practices that promote long-term community sustainability and include better integration of housing, transit and economic development. Educate the public about the benefits and appeal of higher-density development and smaller homes and lots in regard to personal lifestyle as well as public policy. • Help advance development industry practice in regard to mixed income housing and mixed-use projects, including encouraging more availability of financing, and advancing the state of the art in management. • Research public policy, including tax policy, as it affects land use patterns and local land use regulation. • Educate the public about the benefits of affordable housing, especially when it also has appropriate services, as a way to help low income families advance their economic fortunes and live healthier lives, contributing to the well being of the entire community.
