Bread & Roses brings joy, hope and healing through live music to those who are isolated throughout the bay area.

Description:
Bread & Roses produces more than 550 shows a year (50 a month!) in eight Bay Area counties. Each month nearly 1500 residents attend these productions in hospitals, convalescent homes, AIDS facilities, centers for the developmentally disabled, alcohol and drug programs, homeless shelters, psychiatric wards, special school programs, and correctional facilities. Bread & Roses operates with limited paid staff. Therefore, the success of our programs depends on the hundreds of volunteers who graciously give their time, energy and expertise to the organization and its mission.

History:
Bread & Roses was founded in 1974 by singer-songwriter Mimi Fariña to help alleviate the sense of isolation experienced by people confined to institutions -- by bringing them free, live, quality entertainment, and, in turn, to offer performing artists a rare opportunity for community service. This unique partnership of performing arts and social service was pioneered by Bread & Roses and its founding vision has inspired other groups around the nation to provide similar services in their own communities.
