Falkirk Cultural Center
The Falkirk Cultural Center enriches the communities of San Rafael and Marin County by providing cultural programs, art exhibits, and serving as a historical setting for community gatherings.
Description:
At the heart of the Falkirk Cultural Center is a Contemporary Art Gallery with changing exhibitions featuring prominent Marin and Bay Area artists. A school art education program called Learning to Look hosts hundreds of children each year to view, learn about and reinterpret art in the galleries. However, art is not the only cultural offering Falkirk provides. Seasonal public events such as the Teddy Bear Tea in December and San Rafael Food and Wine Festival in August have become popular traditions at the Falkirk Cultural Center. Falkirk also holds art classes For Kids Only, and Poetry Readings as well as hosting workshops and lectures on a variety of subjects. The 1888 Victorian Mansion sits on eleven beautiful tree-shaded acres and is an elegant site for private events. With a maximum capacity of 125 people the Center is available to rent for weddings, anniversaries, Bar Mitzvahs, holiday celebrations, memorial services and private parties. Also housed at Falkirk is the Marin Poetry Center and the Marin Literacy Program.
History:
Falkirk Cultural Center is a 19th century country estate listed on the National Historic Register. The Queen Anne Victorian, designed by Clinton Day, was built in 1888 by Ella Nichols Park, and purchased by Captain Robert Dollar in 1906. Falkirk is named after Dollar's birthplace in Scotland, and his descendants occupied the house until 1970. The estate was saved from demolition in 1974. The Cultural Center is owned and operated by the City of San Rafael and has served the community for 30 years.
