The mission of The Redwoods is to provide a creative, affordable community that promotes good health, well-being and security for a diverse group of elders.

Description:
Located in Mill Valley, The Redwoods currently has more than 330 residents and offers four levels of care, which often enables seniors to continue living here even when their capacity for independence diminishes, and they require around-the-clock personal health care. We have consistently attracted creative, lively people, and the diverse interests and abilities of our residents, together with their willingness to share life experiences, help make this senior community extraordinarily special. Among the activities we currently offer are drama readings, culture and language clubs, discussion groups, drumming circles, strength training, yoga, tai chi, bridge, computer training, writing and memory classes, music and entertainment, socials, peace demonstrations and organic gardening. Our campus is ideally situated on ten acres across the street from public transportation, a major grocery store, coffee bar, juice bar, bank and several physicians’ offices. In addition, the Mill Valley Community Center is located just two blocks away, offering a swimming pool, fitness center and many recreational activities. The Redwoods also borders the Bothin Marsh at the north end of Richardson Bay, a thriving habitat for bird watching that includes a multipurpose path for residents to enjoy one of Marin County's most treasured natural resources.

History:
The Redwoods has provided an affordable and active home for thousands of seniors over the past thirty-four years. In the mid-1960’s, members of the Mill Valley Community Church recognized the need to build a facility that could provide quality care for seniors of low and moderate income. They envisioned an affordable and welcoming home where elders “could live with dignity and integrity, retaining a sense of self and community in an atmosphere of love and respect.” As The Redwoods grew, the church made a decision to “give” the organization to the community in order to ensure its effectiveness and to allow for more experienced and diversified leadership. Today, The Redwoods is a community based nonprofit organization with no church affiliations, but the values of our founders have remained with us throughout the years. The first residents arrived at The Redwoods in December 1972, and almost immediately opportunities for companionship, fulfillment, learning and creative expression opened up to them.
