The Tibetan Aid Project helps to rebuild, preserve, strengthen, and perpetuate Tibet's cultural and spiritual heritage for the benefit of the Tibetan people and all humanity.

Description:
The Tibetan Aid Project raises funds for the production and shipment of traditional books in the Tibetan language, which are distributed in the Himalayan region free of charge. In the twenty years since the project began, over 2.5 million texts, 110,000 prayer wheels, and 4 million sacred art prints have been distributed to the Tibetan community in exile. These sacred texts and other items help keep Tibet’s spiritual and cultural traditions alive.

The Tibetan Aid Project operates with 100% volunteer labor. The books are also produced and distributed by volunteers.

History:
Tibetan Aid Project was founded in 1969 by Tarthang Tulku, a leading Tibetan master and teacher, to support the courageous efforts of Tibetans to survive in exile and re-establish their rich cultural heritage. In its first decade, TAP worked to help refugees in need of food, clothing, medicine, and supplies. The Pen Friend Program initiated in 1969 enabled Americans to send funds directly to thousands of Tibetans. Many of the friendships established in the 1970s and 1980s through this program continue to the present day.

As needs for basic necessities became less urgent, TAP intensified efforts to support restoration and construction of monasteries and schools of higher learning for Tibetans in exile and also in Tibet. Although the Project continues to provide assistance for monastic centers and monks, nuns, and lay people, its scope has steadily expanded. Current activities include efforts to preserve the wisdom tradition that is Tibet's unique heritage and promote the vitality of its living lineage.
