Agency Details:
Spectrum: Center For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Concerns
The mission of Spectrum is to provide community leadership in promoting acceptance, understanding, and full inclusion for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.
Description:
Serving more than 8,000 people each year, Spectrum is the only agency in Marin with the sole focus of providing programs, services, and resources that benefit LGBT people. Our services include programs for youth and seniors; diversity training for health and social service providers; an annual family camp for LGBT parents and their children; in-service training programs for middle and high school teachers and administrators; and an individual counseling program that provides LGBT-sensitive therapy services on a sliding scale basis.
History:
Spectrum was founded as Ministry of Light in 1982 by Rev. Dr. Jane Adams Spahr, a lesbian Presbyterian minister. In 1990, Rev. Spahr left Ministry of Light to found her own organization, that All May Freely Serve. Ministry of Light became non-sectarian and changed its name to Spectrum, Center for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns. In 1998 the mission and name were changed to include transgender issues. Today, Spectrum remains a unique resource to Marin County and the North Bay, with a focus on creating a safe, accepting community where everyone is welcome to participate without fear of prejudice or discrimination.
