Bridge The Gap Tutoring
Bridge the Gap College Prep's mission is to provide comprehensive educational support to the children of Marin City, with the goal that every Marin City child graduates high school and completes college.
Description:
We are a one on one tutoring program ,working with Marin City youth in grades K-12.Our students and tutors are matched and stay together for the year. This allows them to get to know each other, and for the tutor to be more effective in helping their student. Two credentialed teachers circulate and support the tutor/student pairs. Our Student Advocate works with the schools to monitor student performance and needs, and shares that information with the tutors and teachers.
The tutor commitment is twofold: being there for the student every week, nurturing them and developing a relationship with them. The other is supporting them in school, helping them with their homework , strengthening their math, reading and writing skills.
High school students are welcome but must have a parent or adult as co-tutor the first few weeks, and then as back up if they are unable to make a session.
Commitment: We ask that each tutor be willing to meet consistently with their student either on Monday evenings, Tuesday evenings, at our tutoring center in Marin City. In addition, we ask that tutors contact their students before each session to confirm and encourage the student's attendance. The program runs throughout the school year and has a summer break.
After becoming familiar with our setting at the Marin City Church of God, each new tutor will be assigned a student. Students work with their tutors in on-on-one pairs and remain in the same pair throughout the year.
History:
Denni Locke, Fred Small and Bob Hunter started Bridge The Gap Tutoring in 1995 with a handful of students and tutors at the Marin City Church of God. With the help of volunteers and funding from Sausalito Presbyterian Church, the Marin Community Foundation, and various local organizations, the program gradually expanded. In 1998 Bridge The Gap added the services of an on-site teacher.
Today the program serves approximately 70 students in grades K-12 from the Marin City Community. We continue to receive funding from several Marin and Bay Area foundations, companies and individuals. In the 2009-2010 school year our volunteers will donate over 4,000 fun and productive hours to our project.
