City Of Novato Independent Elders Program
Building a local coalition through community partnerships to identify, develop, and enhance services to seniors with a focus on the isolated, frail, and multicultural older adults in Novato.
Description:
Novato Independent Elders Program (NIEP) is a partnership program between the City of Novato and Marin Community Foundation. NIEP's programs are developed within a coalition of concerned citizens, local businesses and other local agencies involved in senior services who come together to identify areas of concern and develop programs to address those areas. NIEP programs are focused on the needs of Novato's older, more frail population in order to support their ability to remain living independently in their own homes. All NIEP programs depend on partnerships within the community, and volunteers to complete the work.
History:
NIEP was formed in 1990 as a part of the Marin Independent Elders Project which was one of 11 projects in the Bay Area funded through the Bay Area Independent Elders Project. The consortium's intent was that by the end of the funding cycle, local coalitions and their programs would adopt the existing entities. In fall of 1994, the Novato Coalition asked the City Of Novato's Margaret Todd Senior Center (MTSC) to incorporate their service for frail elders as an addition ot existing senior programs at MTSC. On April 1, 1995 funds from Marin Communty Foundation, PacificCare Foundation and other grants, along with funding and in-kind contributiions from the City of Novato enabled NIEP to become a program at MTSC.
