VOLUNTEER ON MT. TAMALPAIS Business Volunteer Council Featured listings Youth Groups Families Master Volunteer Program of Marin

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on September 1, 2009

Come to Mt. Tamalpais to hike and volunteer. Here at the Marin Municipal Water District, we are making efforts to protect our federally listed "species of special concern," the Foothill Yellow-Legged Frog. What we need are a few volunteers for the months of March to June to hike out to Little Carson Falls and help us educate the public about the frogs and help prevent the destruction of valuable egg masses. Come protect biodiversity while experiencing beautiful Mt. Tam. Although we are in greatest need of Frog Docents, we also host a number of other volunteer opportunities every month. Come and get your hands dirty on the watershed!

Mt.Tamalpais Trail Days: Generally the 1st Saturday of Each Month, 9:00am-2:30pm
Join our most skilled volunteers and staff as they maintain and repair our trail system: building bridges, installing fencing, cutting back brush, repairing stairs and installing erosion control structures. Hike along a beautiful trail and take pride in knowing that you helped to make it happen. Must be at least 16 years old.
Contact (415) 945-1128 for details and location.

Roving Weeders: Generally the 3rd Thursday of Each Month, 9:00am–12:00pm
Travel to the interior Mt.Tamalpais Watershed, far from bathrooms, parking, and the general public. Look forward to planting natives in the winter season and taking on threatening invasive plants for the remainder of the year. Help protect some of the most sensitive and unique habitats on Mt.Tamalpais. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are welcome.
Contact (415) 945-1128 for details and location.

Habitat Restoration: Generally the 3rd Saturday of Each Month, 9:00am–12:00pm
Make new friends while battling invasive weeds to restore habitat along Mt. Tamalpais’ lakeshores. Increase your knowledge of Mt. Tamalpais’ unique plant and animal life while contributing to their continued survival. This program focuses on invasive species control with a special emphasis on French broom. Sites are chosen to be scenic and accessible. Children over the age of 8 are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
Contact (415) 945-1128 for details and location.

Contact (415) 945-1128 for details.

Locations of events will change monthly, dependent on the restoration needs. Please see our website www.marinwater.org or contact the Volunteer Program at (415) 945-1128 and volunteerprogram@marinwater.org for more details.

Please pre-register for each event so we will be prepared with ample tools, staff and snacks!

Directions:

From San Francisco: Take Highway 101 North to the Central San Rafael Exit. Make a left turn on Third Street. Stay on Third. It will turn into Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Stay on Sir Francis Drake until you get to Fairfax town limits. You will go over a small hill and as you head down look for a “Valero” gas station on your left. Make a left immediately after the gas station at the wooden “Fairfax” sign (unfortunately there is a well hidden street sign that many motorist do not see, but the cross-street is Pacheco). At the stop sign make a right onto Broadway. At the next stop sign make a left onto Bolinas Rd. Go up Bolinas road approximately 1.5 miles (you will pass the Deer Park Villa restaurant). At 700 Bolinas Road there is a wooden sign on your left saying “Lake Lagunitas”. Make that left turn onto Sky Oaks Road; go up approximately 1/4 mile and Sky Oaks Watershed Headquarters is on the left at the crest of the hill. You are also at the entrance to Lagunitas and Bon Tempe Lakes. (If you miss the Sky Oaks Road turn-off and you get to the Meadow Club golf course you have gone too far). A $7.00 Vehicle Entrance Fee is required daily. The Lagunitas picnic area is about 1½ miles beyond the entrance Kiosk/Pay Station. After you have paid your entrance fee, stay on the paved road and within a mile or so you will come to a long straightaway and then a T-intersection. Go right at the intersection; within 100 yards you will be at the Lake Lagunitas parking area. From the East Bay: Go across the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge. Head north on 101. Take the Central San Rafael exit. Follow instructions from above. From Sonoma: Take 101 south. Take the Central San Rafael exit. Make a right onto Third Street. Follow the directions from above.
