Enjoy Helping, Enjoy Horses??

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on January 2, 2010

Discover the fun and satisfaction of helping a disabled child or adult experience life without barriers through the freedom and mobility of riding a horse. At Halleck Creek our team of gentle horses and wonderful volunteers work together to improve the mental, physical, and emotional health of people with disabilities. Through weekly therapeutic riding sessions our riders learn to imagine a future, and enjoy the present, in a way they never thought possible. We have a complete training program to help acquaint you with the special skills needed to volunteer. Come join our special "family" at the Halleck Creek Ranch; you may leave with a broader smile than the riders!

Mondays, Tuesdays, and/or Wednesdays 9:30-11:30am: We need help cleaning paddocks (scooping poop, really!), using pitch forks and wheelbarrows. No minimum commitment necessary, but some commitment would be helpful. These volunteers are not required to be fingerprinted, and do not need to attend an orientation. You DO, however, need to sign up with us in advance.

Saturdays 1:30-3:00pm: We need help with the riding program, helping with horses and disabled riders. Volunteers are not required to have horse experience, and are trained by staff and volunteer trainers. They help by leading horses and helping to sidewalk and support riders. Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of 40 hours in the first 6 months of volunteering, and are required to be fingerprinted if you're 18 years of age or older (at no cost to the volunteer). Although the time frame specified above is from 1:30-3:00pm, it doesn't necessarily mean that you cannot come to help earlier in the day (the day begins at 8:00am). It simply means that this is the time slot during which we currently need the most help. These volunteers ARE REQUIRED to attend an orientation and a full day of training, and must sign up in advance to do so.

Due to the nature of the volunteer job, we do not accept volunteers under the age of 12.
