Foster parents needed for feral kittens and young cats Master Volunteer Program of Marin

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on January 17, 2010

Marin Friends of Ferals often rescues homeless and abandoned cats that have recently given birth. Feral kittens are adoptable if found before 3 months old. With socialization and human contact, kittens learn to trust humans and are no longer considered feral; they become domesticated, and therefore, adoptable.

Foster parents keep kittens in a separate room from the rest of the family and other pets. MFF supplies foster parents with food and any medicines needed, as well as cat beds, litter boxes and toys.

Offering your home and heart to these young cats is often life-changing to them. It's the difference between a life spent living in bushes in fear of humans, or having a life with a loving family in a forever home.

The only requirements for becoming a foster parent is to have a love for cats, a safe home environment with an enclosed space for the cats, and some time each day to devote to playing with and socializing them. We can help you prepare the room or area in which they will be fostered and review any feeding requirements or special needs.

Once the kittens are comfortable being held and cuddled and are exposed to life in a home, they go up for adoption either through our organization or the Marin Humane Society. Time involved fostering varies on the age of the cat but can be anywhere from 2 weeks to a month. Neonatal kittens require more experience and around the clock feedings but we can teach those willing to take on that responsibility. Support is always at hand, if needed.
