FLAGship Teacher’s Aide

The FLAGship bus (Families Learning And Growing) is a project of Marin Literacy Program, and the major funding is provided by First 5 of Marin. The bus makes weekly visits to 12-14 sites throughout Marin County to reach isolated families not being served by preschool services. The Volunteer Teacher’s Aide will assist 2 staff members on the bus in working with children and parents, presenting school-readiness activities, storytimes, health information, and English literacy. Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist staff in presenting storytimes, songs, school-readiness activities.
  2. Supervise and help maintain a safe environment for children 0-5 years old.
  3. Assist and engage parents and caregivers in FLAGship activities, helping to improve
their English literacy skills.

Qualifications:

  1. Ability to work comfortably with people of all abilities, cultures and languages.
  2. Experience working with preschool-aged children and their parents.
  3. Complete required background check and fingerprinting by County.

  4. Training and Support Provided:
  5. Attend MLP’s 1.5 hour orientation and 7-hour volunteer training (not required for tutors already trained by MLP).
  6. Spend one day on the FLAGship observing staff and daily site activities.

  7. Time Commitment:
Attend 1 specific site (1.5 - 2 hours) per week and arrive promptly for each session. Bus hours are 8:30-2:30 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. See website for schedule of sites.

Length of Commitment:
6 months.
