Maintain language fluency and increase surgical access for low-income, uninsured individuals. Provide interpretive services for non-English speaking patients and assist them in filling out paperwork at doctors’ appointments and/ or surgeries. The position is offered throughout the week and/ or on Saturdays at doctors’ offices and medical facilities in any of six Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Sonoma). Required Skills: Desire to learn about the healthcare system and medical terminology. Volunteers must be fluent in English and Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, or Cantonese. You will also be asked to undergo a fluency evaluation. Must have a positive attitude, good communication skills, and attention to detail. Interpreters only need to have moderate availability, minimum 2 appointments per month, with a minimum commitment of 3 – 6 months. The appointment can range from 1 – 4 hours.
